My favorite UA-ASU true story of all time concerns how the UofA ended up in Tucson.  In the late 1800s, Tucson and Phoenix were competing before the Territorial Legislature over which would get the state insane asylum and which would get the university.  The asylum was desired over the university because it represented more jobs.

Well, poor old Tucson lost out and ended up with the UofA.  I have a feeling that moment was the birth of the "Phoenix envy" movement in Tucson and they have never forgiven us for taking the plum (the asylum) and leaving them with the leftovers (the UofA).  It also firmly established the tradition of Tucson as a loser town.
